Connecticut Couple Catches Bobcat On Tape In Yard

January 22, 2008

I know this might be a couple years old but, I just found this news report and video and wanted to share it. It shows a Bobcat pouncing on a unsuspecting Woodchuck. This is something that is rather rare and not seen very often if any.

Connecticut (Sept. 29, 2006) ? Recent bobcat sightings in central Massachusetts have some homeowners on alert and one family just south of the border in Connecticut has spotted a bobcat at least six times recently even catching it on camera.

The first time the family saw her- they think the bobcat’s a she- was on July 18th. Keith Dunkley was in the kitchen on his house.

“I noticed there was a woodchuck out there, so I grabbed my video camera,” he said.

The woodchuck was then attacked by the bobcat. Keith’s wife, Tina attempted to shoo away the bobcat to save the woodchuck.

The Dunkleys called Connecticut environmental officials about their furry visitor.

“They said they were fairly common in this area and weren’t surprised something like this would happen,” said Keith Dunkley.

Marion Larson, the outreach coordinator for Mass wildlife says people in such places as Grafton, where a bobcat sighting was recently reported, should have little concern except for their pets, because bobcats tend to avoid people.

“We’re the third most densely populated state in the country, five million acres with six million people on it sharing with wildlife and to have this elusive creature is a wonderful thing,” Larson said.

Great story! I spotted one this morning (June 11/10) on my drive to work on Newgate Drive – O’neill Rd in Oxford CT. Beautiful cat, about 16-18 inches at the shoulder, short black tail, and grey color. Tried to get a pic but he was gone down the bank and back into the woods before I could get the camera out. Last similar cat that I spotted was a Lynx up in Northern Ontario several years ago.

August 2nd, 2010 I saw a bob cat in my back yard in Brookfield. I called police and they told me not to worry. Just local wildlife. Good thing my cats are indoor.

I also spotted a bobcat in Brookfield. It was towards the end of July (2010), running from N-S across Rte 133 near Prince of Peace nursery school.

I’m not sure what kind of cat (I assume Bobcat) that I saw at 2 pm on Wednesday Feb. 9th, 2011 on Rte. 63 in Bethany, CT. I almost hit it, less than 15 feet in front of the car and it was really big. Gray and sandy in color and just a whoosh across the 2 lane blacktop. Gone in a flash with a huge leap over the guardrail and snow bank. I am an avid outdoors men, hiker, camper and fishermen and have never seen anything like this in CT before. This is no BS and the real deal!!
