Turkey-hunting season is six weekends away, and Sam Stowe is ready to go.

We’re not real sure how well he’ll be sleeping, however.

“Some seasons, I think you get intrigued by one bird. It gets under your skin,” said Stowe, who grew up hunting on family farmland in Newton County. “I get to where I can’t sleep because of one bird. I’ll hunt one bird all season.

DEER: Town hunt kills 79; more land sought

The total tally in this year’s town deer hunt was 79, more than triple the “take” of the previous year, which saw the town’s first hunt. Hunting season ended last Thursday, Jan. 31.

Deer Implementation Committee Chair Tom Belote said he considers this year’s hunt to have been very successful, partly because it was expanded to include open space in Ridgebury and in southern Ridgefield. In the first year, deer-hunting on town open space was restricted to one “test parcel” at the Hemlock Hills preserve.

Coyotes, up close

It wasn’t so long ago that Lower and Outer Cape Codders were fed up with coyotes walking boldly through back yards, snatching small dogs and cats, and making their dens too close to family neighborhoods. Many complained to town officials and wrote letters to the editor calling for, among other things, increased hunting of the animals. But in the last year or two, much of the criticisms and worries seem to have died down.

Safe Paddling Demonstrations to be held in New Haven

The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) Boating Division, in cooperation with ConnYak, the City of New Haven Department of Parks and Recreation, and the US Coast Guard, will present an afternoon of safe paddling demonstrations and information sessions on Saturday, March 1, at the Wilbur Cross High School, 181 Mitchell Drive, New Haven from 1 PM to 4 PM. All demonstrations take place at the indoor pool.

The event is free of charge and will feature in-pool demonstrations and other topics including self-rescue, choosing the right craft and communications.

Professionals from the US Coast Guard, certified canoe and kayak instructors from the City of New Haven, and a variety of representatives from the paddling industry and the DEP Boating Division will be on hand to answer any questions.

Fellow hunter rescues trophy antlers from an I-80 fate

If not for the good instincts of a stranger, and fellow hunter, Randy Miller’s only keepsake of this whitetail would be this picture of the day he shot the buck from a tree stand in western Kansas. Once repaired, Miller’s dad plans to take the mount to Kansas in May, this time secured in the trunk of a car.Mike Cvitak knows a nice set of antlers when he sees one.

Hunters, landowners and anyone interested in Quality Deer Management (QDM)!! The Connecticut River Valley Branch invites you to a Deer Management and Food Plot Development Seminar. Howard Kilpatrick, leading Deer Biologist for the state of Connecticut DEP, will discuss the current status of deer management in the state of Connecticut. Matt Ross, New England/Canada Regional Director for QDMA, will discuss the processes of planning and constructing food plots in field and forest settings, how to use food plots to complement natural habitat, and the many forage options available.The event is scheduled for 7-8:30p.m. on Tuesday March 4 in the second floor conference room at Cabela’s, 475 East Hartford Boulevard, East Hartford, CT 06118.
